1. The actual television show is in italics. The name of a particular episode is in quotations.

2. I know there's a way to do it; I'm just not sure how. It involves editing software.
We use quotes for TV shows and movies, but that's AP style and I don't know if academic papers follow AP style.

Thanks! I knew you'd come through :)

Yikes, editing software? Okay, maybe I'm in over my head here.

Thanks Kelly! I think which style you use depends on your discipline. I've always used MLA because that's what you do with literature. Education, however, uses APA (as does science, I believe). This paper is for an education class but I think we can use whatever style we prefer. All this to say, I am very confused!
All of the entertainment writers -- TV Guide, Entertainment Weekly, etc. -- put TV shows in italics. I just double-checked. And my nephew can edit stuff together. I don't think it's hard; it just requires the right software. (Of course, I have no idea what it is. Moviemaker, maybe?)

If you're using MLA, the TV show would be in italics or can be underlined.

As an aside, I don't know if you've ever been assigned to buy The Everyday Writer by Andrea Lunsford, but I think it's one of the EASIEST reference guides ever, and includes sections on MLA, APA and Chicago Style in an easy, tabbed spiral bound book. I could not have survived the paper writing of the past few years without it!

Good luck!

The video creation is a pain. Since iTunes files are copy-protected, I think only QuickTime Pro will let you edit and create a new video that is of the clip size you want. However, embedding that in a powerpoint slide will be tricky, even if you do get the video clip you want.

Alternately, you could get an unprotected video in one of the following ways:

1) If you have a video-out from your computer, you can play the video out of your computer to a recording device, such as a VCR or camcorder. then you have to import this back in and edit the video as needed.

2) You could get a software application that does a video/screen capture to a movie file - these are typically used for people to record a set of actions to create a demonstration or instructional video on how to do something on their computer (screencasts), but you could probably use it to capture the video playing on your screen. I don't know how many of these actually record video that is playing on the screen though, so you'll have to check that out.

All of these are a major pain in the butt. You might just be better off playing it from your iTunes file, setting it up before-hand to the point you want, switching applications mid-presentation to iTunes, and then switch back when you're done.

You could always check to see if it's on youtube. Then there are websites that will take that youtube clip and createa a file for you, in a format (avi, wma, etc.) you can import into powerpoint.

Italicize, definitely.

On using powerpoint...do you have office 2007?

If so, then it will work with iTunes(or at least I have gotten it to) just go to the insert tab then the media file, then "movie from a file" once your there, if it's not working right, hit F1. There is a help section that might be able to walk you through it.

If for some reason iTunes doesn't work, then copy it from youtube and then import it using the same directions. If you don't have 2007, go to microsoft.com and look up the help section for office...I am not 100% sure how to do it on there.

I certainly hope I've helped and not hindered your cause!

Thanks!

I don't have The Everyday Writer, but I should plan to get it. Mostly I've used the MLA handbook, but since I've moved in Education I have to forget all that and learn APA.

Thanks so much for your input, Ross. I appreciate your expertise! I think you are right -- it would definitely be easier to switch between applications and, let's face it, wouldn't affect the grade at all. Thanks again.
Thanks for your input! Good idea, I will for sure check Youtube.
Thanks so much for the advice! Yes, I am using Office 2007. I will try what you suggested :)
